The Friends of Well Lane : The Friends of Well Lane was formed in September 2003 - current aims are primarily social and fund raising.
Our very enthusiastic committee arranges a variety of functions including discos for children, Christmas fairs, toy sales, raffles and sponsored events. Functions are well attended and we hope for your support in this way. Details of future events are in our monthly newsletter & hopefully on this website. The Annual General Meeting to which all our parents and members of staff are warmly invited takes place in early September. Recently the Friends of Well Lane have raised funds to subsidise school trips, purchase fleece tops for the sports teams and to provide each child with a homework bag / P.E. Kit TIMES OF DAY Doors open to children at 8:45 a.m.
Registration 8:55 a.m. Part time Foundation 1 children finish their morning session at 11:25 a.m. Lunchtime for children in F2, Y1 and Y2 12 noon - 1 p.m. Lunchtime for children in Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6 12:15p.m. - 1:15p.m. Part time Foundation 1 children begin their afternoon session at 1p.m. School ends at 3:20p.m. (3:30p.m. for F1) PUNCTUALITY It is really important that children are in school on time. It is difficult to catch up if the beginning of a lesson is missed. After 9a.m. latecomers must use the main entrance to school and will be asked to explain why they are late. Children who are regularly late may receive a visit from the Education and Social Welfare Officer. IF YOUR CHILD IS ILL.......... Please inform the school as soon as possible so that we can authorise the absence. If we don't hear from you Mrs Hughes, Home/School Link Officer may telephone you. The Education and Social Welfare Officer checks the registers each week and will contact the families of pupils who seem to have a lot of time off. If there are health concerns the School Nurse may be in touch to offer assistance. We monitor the attendance of each pupil and reward those with good or improving attendance. Mrs Hughes can let you have more details.
DINNER TIME If your child is eligible to receive a Free School Meal you need to register them with the Education Department, Hamilton Building, Birkenhead. Tel: 606 2000. If you wish to buy a meal for your child they need to pay each day at a cost of ~ £2.00 Metro Catering provides school meals Alternatively your child may bring a packed lunch. This should not contain sweets or fizzy drinks as they are not allowed in school apart from in exceptional circumstances. One or two children prefer to go home for their lunch. Please keep school informed of what you wish your child to do. GOOD MANNERS.... We hope to use dinner times as an opportunity to teach the children good table manners and to give them information about how to eat healthily. This is again one of our targets for 2009-10! SCHOOL UNIFORM
We believe that school uniform creates a feeling of belonging and a positive attitude towards school and we encourage parents to support us in this belief. The school uniform at Well Lane Primary School is: Grey or navy trousers / skirt Grey or navy jumper / cardigan / sweatshirt Blue or white shirt / blouse / polo shirt Navy jogging pants may be worn in Nursery and Reception classes Blue gingham dresses School shoes Navy blue sweatshirts having an embroidered school logo are also available for purchase. Uniform can be bought from: URBAN DESIGN 260 OLD CHESTER ROAD 644 5599 PE T-shirts, with the school logo, and shorts are also available at ~ £3. JEWELLERY The wearing of jewellery is discouraged for safety reasons. Only stud ear rings are permissible. We expect them to be removed for PE and swimming lessons or, with parental permission, to be covered with a sticking plaster. The school will not take responsibility for accidents caused by them. Children coming to school with inappropriate jewellery will be asked to remove it. If a child is not in uniform for any reason they should only wear clothing that is as close as possible to school colours. Football shirts are not allowed and children will be asked to cover them with a spare school sweatshirt. PLEASE PUT YOUR CHILD'S NAME IN ALL OF THEIR CLOTHES. Children at school have always lost clothing, spilled food or paint and glue. It is part of being a child. Do not send them to school in expensive "designer" clothing. You will be upset if it gets spoiled.
THE CURRICULUM During the Foundation stage (Nursery, Reception and Year 1 as appropriate) the curriculum is divided into 6 areas of learning: Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication, Language and Literacy, Mathematical Development, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Physical Development and Creative Development. Children are taught using the Continuous Provision model. Miss Warwick (Leader of Foundation Stage Learning) can give you more details about this. From Year 1 as the children become ready they begin to access the National Curriculum Key Stage 1 subjects. The school provides a broad and balanced curriculum, which caters for differing abilities. The content of the curriculum is planned in such a way that all subjects are covered and these are listed below: English, History, Mathematics, Geography, Science Design Technology, Information Technology, Music, Physical Education, Religious Education, Art, PSHE (Personal, Social & Health Education) A really important aim of our school is to teach the children skills that will be useful for life. We aim for the skills of communication, application of number, information technology, working with others, improving own performance and solving problems, to be developed. Often learning will be planned on a particular theme so that the different skills learned can compliment each other. For example a skill learned in a Literacy lesson will be applied in Geography or Science. We try to make the curriculum interesting to our pupils and are continually developing the ways in which we do so. In the first half term in Autumn parents are sent specific information about the curriculum by the year group teachers. Advice on helping your child at home will also be given, together with more detailed information on homework. During October and March/April parents will be invited to an individual parent/teacher interview when targets and progress will be discussed for the rest of the year. In July parents will receive an end of year report. Parents may meet with their child's teacher at other times throughout the year. If you wish to arrange an appointment please telephone or call in at the school office. It is usually easier to meet at the end of the school day as the teachers are supervising the children from 8:45 a.m. each morning. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Religious Education has two parts: * Collective Worship Each child takes part in a daily act of worship. These assemblies may take different forms throughout the week, for example, whole school assemblies, key stage assemblies, year group or class assemblies. * Religious Education Lessons Each child is taught Religious Education as a curriculum subject in class. This is based on the Wirral Agreed Syllabus for R.E. (SACRE). It may be taught as a separate subject or part of a wider topic. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from R.E. and collective worship. Homework The amount and type of homework will alter as the pupils grow up. Class teachers will let you know what is required at the beginning of each term. Activities may include reading, spelling practice, learning tables, writing or completing work started in class. Sometimes children may be asked to carry out some research on a topic. SPECIAL NEEDS Special Educational needs at Well Lane are governed by the 1996 Education Act (as amended by the SEN and disability Act 2001) and regulations made under the Act, notably the Education ( Special Educational Needs ) Regulations; and the 2001 Code of Practice. Provision for a vast majority of children with special needs is made within the usual classroom situation. Support Assistants provide additional support in Key Stage 1. A Learning Support teacher from the Local Education Authority visits the school regularly to provide advice and support. At times advice is sought from outside agencies, for example, the Learning Support Service or the Educational Psychology Service, on the best way to provide for an individual child's needs. Sex and Relationship Education.(S.R.E.) The objective of sex and relationship education at Well Lane is to help and support young people through their physical, emotional and moral development. A successful programme, firmly embedded in PSHE, will help young people to learn to respect themselves and others and move with confidence from childhood through adolescence into adulthood. Our younger children develop their knowledge, values and skills of sex and relationship education by studying animal young, parental care and family life of all varieties, growth and development, personal friendships and caring for others through an integrated curriculum. As well as this integrated approach children in Years 5 and 6 children receive a visit from the School Nurse specifically to deal with the onset of puberty as part of their P.S.H.E studies.
